It is with a heavy, but joyful heart that we inform you that longtime Valley Christian staff member and friend, Marty Smith, has been called to his eternal home. Marty passed away peacefully in his sleep on the evening of January 19th. Please be in prayer for those closest to Marty, including his loving wife, Cyndee, and his children, Stephanie “Smith” Liebold ‘98 and Ian Smith ’02. Marty retired from VCS in 2021 after doctors discovered late-stage cancer. Our VCS staff and community has prayed often for Marty, our longtime Facilities Director, for the past two years. Marty’s sharp sense of humor and abiding faith will be sincerely missed by all of us. Marty was truly beloved by so many; in fact, members of our staff and our student body raised money in 2021 to purchase a brick to honor Marty that sits at the entrance of Benson Field today. The brick reads, “To Marty Smith, our student-loving, pancake-flipping, set-building facilities director, thank you!” Shortly after his initial diagnosis in 2021, Marty shared a video with VCS that he asked us to share with the VCS community. We are honored to share this video with you again today, and we are grateful for how often and consistently Marty pointed others to Christ, even in a difficult time.youtu.be/5WCdWPRyQLYWe will share more information about funeral arrangements and any needs the Smith family may have in the coming days. Cyndee has shared that she is depending upon Matthew 11:28 during this difficult time: “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.”UPDATE (01/25/2023): Marty Smith’s memorial will take place on February 4th at 10 AM at Arizona Community Church. ...
