Theatre Productions

Valley Christian Schools’ Theatre program has performed numerous dramatic productions over the years. Students are able to showcase their God-given talents to the VCS community during both the Fall and Spring semesters.

Participating in Theatre at Valley Christian Schools takes on many different forms for students. With opportunities to act, run sound, lighting, and even direct, students develop their gifts as they build confidence and creativity.

Students are able to develop their dramatic skills both in class and after school, with opportunities in a wide variety of productions and theatrical performances.

Theatre (5-6)

 

Theatre 5 (5th Grade)

Students will explore their imagination while building new skills that will prepare them for confidence on the stage and in life. In this class, students will learn key theatre concepts including improvisation, ensemble synergy, and developing a variety of memorized character studies. Students will grow their creativity in both collaborative acting and script writing. All students will be given the opportunity to audition and be cast in our Christmas and Spring end of the semester programs, in-class group activities, Desserts & Scenes performance, and chapel skits. Students will also work on design elements such as costume and prop design. All skill levels are welcome. This course is graded primarily on participation and performance.

There will be additional before or after school rehearsals the week of the Desserts & Scenes, Christmas, and Spring programs.

Theatre 6 (6th Grade)

In this class, students will go in depth into key theatre concepts including improvisation, ensemble synergy, and developing a variety of memorized character studies. Students will grow their creativity in both collaborative acting and script writing. All students will be given the opportunity to audition and be cast in our Christmas and Spring end of the semester programs, in-class group activities, Desserts & Scenes performance, and chapel skits. Theatre (7-8)

 

Theatre 1 (7-8)

This beginning theatre course will take students through the basics of acting; involving movement, characterization, improvisation, concentration, vocal and physical warm-ups, and other techniques. One end of semester performance will give the students the opportunity to showcase the things they have learned.

Students are required to participate in the following performances:

  • Celebration of Christmas
  • Odyssey of Excellence
  • Spring Spectacular

Theatre 2 (8th Grade)

Prerequisite: Theater 1 or instructor recommendation.

This class is a continuation of the material learned in Theatre 1. This course is intended for students have a desire to learn more advanced theatrical/acting skills. Some skills include learning how to write and perform monologues and short plays, develop advanced improv technique, and produce and direct theatrical scenes. Public Performances are required. Students will focus more on theatre history, playwriting, and advanced acting skills. One end of semester performance will give the students the opportunity to showcase the things they have learned. Students will perform in chapel and will be given priority in casting for the Christmas and Spring shows.

Students are required to participate in the following performances:

Theatre 1: Introduction to Theatre

Students will learn the fundamentals of acting and technical theatre.

Course Objectives

Over the course of a full year, students will study Viewpoints technique, Theatre History, and Theatrical Design. Each student will participate in the semester performance as well as audition to participate in any performance requests made by the school (see: Night of Worship, Spiritual Emphasis Conference, chapel, mini tour). Each semester, students will select a specialization for the semester project. Specializations include: acting, stage management, lighting design, sound design, properties design, costume design, makeup design, and more to be graded upon performance of the semester play or musical.

Full year — 1 credit

Advanced Acting

Students will develop a deeper knowledge of acting and dramatic skills for future opportunities such as amateur theatre, college auditions, or long-term careers.

Course Objectives

Academic Goals:

Students will learn and apply advanced theatrical knowledge through the performance of a dramatic production.

  1. Learn advanced material such as College Audition Prep, Stanislavski Method, Meisner, Musical Theatre, and Shakespeare.
  2. Develop acting methods outside of fall and spring performances.
  3. Expand upon musical theatre skills and performance.
  4. Increase and understanding of dramatic speech, such as monologues.

Performance Goals:

In preparation and performances, we wish to reflect Christ in all we do. Every performance is an opportunity to have a significant impact on the world around us through our actions and the ministry of theatre. The final performance includes:

  1. Conduct and execute an effective monologue.
  2. Conduct and execute a dramatic musical performance.
  3. Incorporate script memorization and expression from a designated theatrical production at the conclusion of the fall and spring semesters.
