Chorale

When you arrive for your audition, please be prepared to do the following in front of the panel of judges:

Current VCHS Concert Choir Student Audition Process:

  1. Perform 2 songs you learned in Concert Choir this year to showcase that you learned the songs (and dance) accurately and completely.
  2. Go through a sight-reading example from the Regional Choir website. *This may be sung on any neutral vowel or numbers.
  3. We will ask you to answer the questions found on the interview form listed under “Evaluation”.

Not a Current VCS Concert Choir Student Audition Process:

  1. Select and prepare a song that best demonstrates your vocal and dancing abilities. *Show choir style preferred.
  2. Go through a sight reading example from the Regional Choir website. *This may be sung on any neutral vowel or numbers.
  3. We will ask you to answer the questions found on the interview form listed under “Evaluation”.

  • Please bring in-ear monitors, or headphones/earbuds.
  • Musicians and vocalists are expected to come with all lyrics and chords memorized.
    • If you play an instrument and sing, you may choose to accompany yourself. You must notate this in your sign up.
  • You will sing or play with a live house band, click, and track.
  • Please pay attention to your instrument part when preparing for your audition. Ie., if you are auditioning for electric guitar, learn the guitar lead line.
  • Bring your interview form to your audition.
  • You must provide your own instrument if auditioning for guitar or bass.

What we are looking for:

  • Instrumentalist musicality.
  • Ability to stay on click.
  • Vocal tones, pitch, and blending. Vocalists must be able to demonstrate a strong grasp of harmony.
  • Music and lyric memorization.
  • Leadership and stage presence.
    • Demonstrate a love for worship with confidence and joy!
Valley Rhythmics/Jazz Band

Students interested in auditioning for Jazz Ensemble and Valley Rhythmics should contact Mr. Murray via email at [email protected] before the audition date to make arrangements for pick up music to prepare for the audition. There is also a short application that includes your acknowledging the co-enrollment requirement which requires members of these classes to be also enrolled in another music class.

Advanced Acting

Who can audition for Advanced Acting?

  • Any student who has taken a full year of Intro to Theatre.
  • Any Junior/Senior student who has participated in a main stage production directed by Miss Jones.

What is Advanced Acting?

Advanced Acting is being created specifically for students who are passionate about acting and would like to develop their skills for future use such as amateur theatre, college auditions, or long-term careers. Units include College Audition Prep, Stanislavski Method, Meisner, Musical Theatre, and Shakespeare. A student who plans to be in this class should be prepared for collegiate model training with frequent memorization projects outside of the fall or spring performance pieces.

What should I prepare for my audition?

  • 2 contrasting monologues about 45 seconds each. Choose one dramatic monologue (“serious”) and one comedic monologue (“funny” or children’s theatre). They need to be from a play, no movie or television monologues.
  • 32 bars or about 1 minute of a musical theatre song. This should be from a stage show, no Disney movies or musical movies. (Note: Frozen the Musical is different from Frozen the movie. Same story, different songs. Many shows are like this so do your research!)
    • Please note, this is not a chorale or musical audition. This piece shows a willingness to try new things. We will have a musical theatre unit in class, and I need to know that you will be willing to make an attempt even if you don’t consider yourself a “singer.” (As my director and mentor once said, “Anyone can learn to sing. Musical theatre is just actors who happen to be able to sing.”)
  • One page essay on one of two prompts:
    • Why theatre matters (in society, in the Church, in education, in general)
    • Why I love theatre
