Despite the bizarre circumstances leading up to this game, the Valley Christian Trojans were able to easily defeat the Santa Cruz Valley Dust Devils 40-0 Friday night. Valley Christian’s original game against Veritas Prep, planned for Thursday, was cancelled due to injuries, and Santa Cruz had a Thursday forfeit win over Baboquivari. The teams decided to meet on Friday on short notice, and the Eloy, AZ Santa Cruz team traveled to Chandler in a failed attempt to get two wins in two days.
The first quarter went by quickly, spanning just 18 scoreless minutes. In the second quarter, the Trojan offense started to get loose. Quarterback Chris Williams scrambled for a 37-yard gain, and running back Michael Gay would later carry the ball into the end zone for the first touchdown of the game.
After a defensive stop, Chris Williams connected with Christian Sanchez for a 35-yard touchdown on the first play of the drive. The Trojans would force a 3 and out on the next drive. Michael Gay proved to be a workhorse on the next drive. His effort was capped off with a 6 yard touchdown run to make the score 19-0. Gay finished the game with 7 carries for 92 yards and 2 touchdowns.
On the next drive, Williams would throw an impressive 50 yard strike to Alijah Gammage to make the score 26-0. The scoring run would continue on the next drive, where Riley Rhodes would catch a touchdown deep in the red zone to make the score 33-0 going into the half.
In the 3rd quarter, the Trojans killed off any spirit that the Santa Cruz Valley Dust Devils had left. A 4-yard touchdown pass from Williams to Mason Goodell capped off the VC drive. The score was 40-0 and would remain that way for the rest of the game.
