Our boys track and field and golf teams each completed dominating performances at the state championships to capture the 2018 state title in their sports.
The wins extend our school’s streak of winning a state championship to 28 years.
Casey Huguez earned two individual state titles and James Koch won the title in the javelin. The boys team also featured two championship relay teams, nine other medalists, and had a total of 15 individuals and three relay teams score points. The championship 4×100 relay team of Tim Jentgen, James Koch, Jake Orth, and Casey Huguez broke a 27 year old school record on Friday and turned around and broke their own record in the finals on Saturday with a winning time of 43.25.
Track & Field head coach David Mehlhorn ’04 also became the first alumnus to win a state championship as a head coach. He also won six state championships as a student-athlete at Valley Christian.
Congratulations are also in order for our girls team for their fifth place finish, just three points out of third. Chloe Fraley and Hannah Rowe each earned an individual state championship. The girls team also had four other medalists, seven individuals and one relay team score points.
Our golf team dominated the field at the D-III state championships in Tucson this week. The Trojans got out to a great start on Tuesday and increased their lead on Wednesday to capture the team title by an incredible 36 strokes.
James Mackie (-4) finished 2nd individually, Luke Wynn (+7) finished 9th, Trey Harrison (+11) tied for 12th, and Nate Walker (+13) tied for 14th.
It’s the sixth state golf title in school history and the program’s fifth in the last six years!
