Why We Dig for A Cure

In 2017, Valley Christian Libero Alumna Megan Davies (’20) started this event to honor her mother Michelle who is a breast cancer survivor. Today, Kevin “the Dean” McCabe (AZ Preps Live), HonorHealth Systems, and Virginia G. Piper Cancer Centers are proud to be a part of the largest event of its kind in Arizona High School Sports.

Our goal is to create awareness, honor those in our community who have been affected by cancer, and raise funds to directly benefit cancer patients right here in Arizona.

2023 Event: In Loving Memory of Dr. Emily Burkert-Rocha

In addition to honoring everyone in our community affected by cancer, this year we celebrate the life of Dr. Emily Burkert-Rocha. Emily was born in Tempe, Arizona to Bart and Penny Burkert.

She graduated from Valley Christian High School in 2015, Grand Canyon University summa cum laude in 2018 with a Bachelor’s Degree in Biology with an emphasis in Pre-Physical Therapy and minors in Communications and Psychology, and Northern Arizona University in 2022 with her doctorate in Occupational Therapy.

Emily worked as an Occupational Therapist for HonorHealth. Emily married her high school sweetheart, David Rocha in 2019.

To further honor Emily this year, all proceeds and donations raised through the Valley Christian vs. Gilbert Christian Dig for a Cure Challenge match will benefit the newly formed Dr. Emily Burkert-Rocha Endowment fund at Valley Christian.

Emily’s husband, family, and friends have created The Emily Burkert Rocha (’15) Memorial Scholarship to honor the life of this effervescent, well-rounded, kind-hearted, young woman. Emily went to her eternal home with Jesus on July 6, 2023.
