On April 4th and 5th, our Aerospace and Physics classes competed in the ACSI International Christian STEM Competition at Grand Canyon University against approximately 30 Christian schools from all over the country and even a few from outside the U.S. We sent 4 teams of students to the big competition this year. The Aerospace teams were informed of their challenge in advance and created an aircraft made entirely of paper, but with remote-control release mechanisms, to keep their unpowered aircraft in the air as long as possible and landing on a target. They also had to submit an Engineering Design Notebook over a month in advance and give a presentation to a panel of judges about their engineering design process and how they used scripture to guide them as a team. Our two Aerospace teams placed 7th and 14th! The Physics students had 2 teams compete in the On-Site Design challenge, meaning that they had to solve an unknown engineering problem on the spot using only the provided materials, then test what they'd built and justify and explain it before a panel of judges. The standout team was VCS Folks, consisting of Calvin Gage '25, Cam Bergloff '26, Andrew Heck '26, and Hudson Pickett '26 who got an amazing 2nd place finish in the on-site design challenge and brought home a sizable trophy for their efforts. Not only did their mockup rocket-catching device meet all of the scoring criteria and build restrictions, but the team impressed the judges with their knowledge of momentum and acceleration, which they used to justify their design. Additionally, junior Alex Hons, who was on the other On-Site Design team, was awarded the Student Leadership Award for his efforts leading his team.Way to go students! We're so proud! ...
