Although a relatively new addition to the faculty at Valley Christian, Nick Bacon is slowly becoming one of the faces of the teaching staff. Leading the Robotics program to a World Championship and the ensuing media circus will tend to do that.
In addition to leading the Robotics program, Nick also teaches Algebra I and Geometry.
Nick is in his second year at VCHS after teaching at Chandler High School for three-and-a-half years. In addition to teaching and leading the Robotics program, Nick also serves on the faculty technology team as VCHS rolls out the iValley program.
“I went to a Christian school and student taught at Valley and knew what it is about, so when the opportunity came open it was perfect,” Nick said. “I enjoy being able to openly talk about my faith and encourage students in their faith.”
In his two Robotics classes, the students are beginning to design and build their robots for the game that was recently released.
“It’s exciting to see the program grow. We’re up to 23 students in the two classes, including a couple of girls this year. With a young daughter, it’s especially important to me that girls who are interested in STEM have opportunities to have those experiences.”
Asked what led to both teams’ successes last year, Nick commented, “I let them robot.”
In Nick’s Geometry classes the students are currently working on proofs, which is a way to logically show something is true. The students in Geometry are preparing for Algebra II next year.
Nick has been married to his wife Laura for six years. Nick and Laura have a daughter, Millie, who turns four in November.
