Our ASL 1 students recently had the opportunity to experience how it may feel to be deaf in a hearing world. The students took a field trip to Chandler Fashion Center at lunch to order their food using only sign language. Even though it only takes a few minutes to order their food in sign language, it is a huge eye opener for them to see firsthand how they may be treated because they are different.
The ASL class verse, Psalm 139:14, relates that we are fearfully and wonderfully made and God’s works are good, and this includes those who are deaf. God loves all people in this world and He died for all ethnicities (people). John 3:16. Following their field trip, the students wrote about their experience in a paper which incorporated how there is no ethnocentrism with God.
