Instrumental Music

Band 5 & Strings 5

Band 5

In this class, 5th grade students will be assigned a beginning band instrument. Instrument selection will be overseen by the instructor with effort to create a cohesive and balanced ensemble sound. Students will develop music literacy skills during class as well as perform on their instruments at required concerts outside of school hours. Musical styles will range from Christian hymns, patriotic music, and traditional band repertoire. This course is graded primarily on participation and readiness for performances. Families are responsible for supplying their student’s instrument.

There will be additional before or after school rehearsals the week of the Christmas and Spring programs.

Strings 5

Band 6

In this class, 6th grade students will build on the basic band instrumental performance skills. Instrument selection will be overseen by the instructor with effort to create a cohesive and balanced ensemble sound. Students will develop music literacy skills during class as well as perform on their instruments at required concerts outside of school hours. Musical styles will range from Christian hymns to patriotic music, and traditional band repertoire. This course is graded primarily on participation and readiness for performances. Band 7-8 & Strings 7-8

Band 7-8

This course is designed for beginning through advanced band students to improve their skills and perform in a group. Instruments include flute, clarinet, saxophone, trumpet, trombone, and percussion. Students must provide their own instrument. Percussionists are required to learn both bells and snare drum.

Students are required to participate in the following performances:

  • Celebration of Christmas
  • Odyssey of Excellence
  • Spring Spectacular

Strings 7-8

This course is designed for both beginning and advanced strings students to improve their skills and perform in a group. Instruments include violin, viola, cello, and bass. Students must provide their own instrument. Students are required to participate in the following performances

  • Celebration of Christmas
  • Odyssey of Excellence
  • Spring Spectacular

*Please note guitar is not offered as a part of the Orchestra class.

Band (9-12) & String Orchestra

Band (9-12)

The Valley Christian Concert Band is designed to give beginning, intermediate and advanced woodwind, brass, and percussion players a well-rounded music education which includes advancing music pedagogy and band repertoire. Musicians participating in the band are given many opportunities throughout the year to advance their expertise on their instrument both individually and as part of an ensemble. The band prepares for and performs at school spirit events, sporting events, concerts, festivals, and Fine Arts events throughout this year long course.

Full year — 1 credit.

 

String Orchestra (9-12)

Valley Christian String Orchestra is designed to give beginning, intermediate, and advanced string players (violin, viola, cello, bass) a well-rounded music education which includes advancing music pedagogy and string ensemble repertoire. Musicians participating in String Orchestra are given many opportunities throughout the year to advance their expertise on their instrument both individually and as part of an ensemble. String Orchestra prepares and performs at school events, concerts, festivals, and Fine Arts events throughout this year long course.

Full year — 1 credit

Jazz Band (9-12)

The Valley Christian Jazz Band is designed to give intermediate and advanced wind and rhythm players opportunity to explore and play advancing jazz pedagogy and standards in jazz repertoire. This ensemble meets three days per week during 0 Period before the regular school day begins. The Jazz Band prepares and performs in a variety of assemblies, concerts, festivals, and Fine Arts events throughout this year long course. Membership in jazz band is determined by audition and enrollment in concert band.

Valley Rhythmics (9-12)

Valley Rhythmics is designed to give intermediate and advanced percussionists an opportunity to perform in a more advanced rhythmic and “performance art” type of ensemble. Percussionists will be given opportunity to advance their rhythm and drumming expertise by combining the use of unusual instruments and choreography into a performance. Valley Rhythmics prepares for and performs at school spirit events, concerts, festivals, and Fine Arts events throughout this year long course. Membership in Valley Rhythmics is determined by audition and enrollment in a VCS music ensemble.
