A young Valley Christian volleyball team got a taste of the state tournament and apparently liked it so much they decided to stick around a little longer than most predicted.
The Trojans won their first round match easily, 3-0, over #25 Estrella Foothills on Thursday to set up the toughest day in the tournament for any team. Valley Christian defeated #9 Verrado, a school of more than 1,900 which will be playing in 5A next year, in five sets. Not content with a heart-racing five set win, the Trojans proceeded to upset #1 Parker in three sets (25-7; 25-18; 25-17).
The win vaulted VCHS into the Final Four where they would see their season come to an end at the hands of eventual state champion Greenway in four sets (17-25; 25-27; 25-22; 14-25). The Trojans gave the Demons their toughest test of the tournament, holding an early lead in the first set and a 24-17 lead in the second set.
The Trojans started each set with five of the six girls on the floor being sophomores, so it’s easy to get excited about the future of Trojan volleyball. Congratulations to the girls on a successful season.
