We are thrilled to announce that Coach Greg Haagsma has been named the Arizona Republic’s Boys Basketball Coach of the Year for the 2024-25 season. This prestigious recognition is a testament to his unwavering dedication and exceptional leadership at Valley Christian Schools.

Coach Haagsma has been at the helm of the boys’ basketball program for 28 remarkable years. During this time, he has amassed an impressive 672 wins. His coaching journey at Valley Christian has been nothing short of extraordinary. He has led the team to the state tournament 26 times and secured 10 state championship titles. This year, he guided the Trojans to their fourth consecutive state championship, the first in the new Copper Division.

Under Coach Haagsma’s guidance, Valley Christian’s basketball teams have consistently demonstrated excellence on the court. His coaching philosophy emphasizes defensive principles, teamwork, and transition basketball. These elements have been key to the team’s success. This season, the Trojans were led by the talented Grier twins, Carson and Kyle. Along with senior forward Caleb Danzeisen and junior guard Colby Jessup, they played pivotal roles in the team’s 26-3 record.

In addition, Coach Haagsma’s ability to foster a winning culture and develop great team chemistry has been instrumental in Valley Christian’s sustained success. His players understand that good basketball is about more than just scoring. It’s about playing great at both ends of the court.
