Valley Christian volleyball has shot to the top of Division III in 2015 behind exciting play from a youth-filled squad. The Trojans enter tonight’s home contest with a 9-1 record in seeding games and ranked #6 in the division out of 84 schools. In their ten matches so far, they have won an impressive 29 of 33 sets.
In an early season tournament at Chandler High School, Valley Christian defeated two Division I teams in the first day of play to place them in the top pool. They followed up that effort by winning four of five matches at the Estrella Foothills Tournament in September.
The Trojans have recorded some impressive wins along the way. In the last week, they took down the defending D-IV state champions in Arizona Lutheran and defeated a highly-ranked Fountain Hills team.
The team has been getting it done off the court as well. Fifteen girls spent a Saturday in September volunteering at a junior high volleyball tournament. The girls kept score and line judged and received high reviews from tournament coordinators and officials for their work.
This Trojan team isn’t going anywhere anytime soon either. Valley Christian boasts only one senior on the varsity roster and three juniors. The remaining eight on the varsity squad are part of a highly-rated super sophomore class.
First-year head coach Lisa Gross commented on the team, saying, “I love coaching this great group of girls. It is amazing to see them grow not only in their volleyball skills, but also spiritually and in their life skills. We are extremely thankful for the 31 girls in the program and to all be a part of Valley Christian.”
