The Trojan boys basketball team dropped their section championship game to Cortez, but still enter the state tournament as the title favorite according to The Arizona Republic. Senior Mitchell Timmer (15.7 ppg) leads the high tempo Trojan offense which averages 71.6 points per game, while three other starters also average double figure scoring.
Valley Christian was given the #8 seed in the D-III tournament and will open their title defense on Friday night, February 20 at 5:00pm vs. #9 Holbrook at Camelback High School. VCHS is 8-2 in their last ten games.
The Arizona Republic predicts a 63-57 championship game win for the Trojan boys over Cortez, and a second consecutive state title. Historically, championships have come in pairs for Coach Haagsma. Prior to winning the 2014 championship, the Trojans won back-to-back state titles in 2003-2004 and 2006-2007.
Valley Christian leads the state and ranks 5th in the nation in three-point field goals made on the year. The Trojans have connected on 301 triples and have a chance at setting the all-time Arizona record for three-point field goals in a season.
