Valley Christian High School is proud to introduce Kirk Sundberg as the sixth head football coach of Trojan football. The appointment was approved by the Board of Directors on Friday morning at the recommendation of the football hiring committee.
“Kirk brings tremendous teaching ability and football knowledge to our program and we are excited for what the future holds for our student-athletes and school with him at the helm,” Valley Christian Athletic Director Greg Haagsma stated. “Kirk is a relationship-driven coach and a culture guy. We look forward to him leading our program and the impact he will have on our young men on and off the field. Even more so than what he brings to us as a football coach, we look forward to having Kirk and his family join the Valley Christian community and the impression they’ll have.”
Kirk comes to the Trojans from Valor Christian in Highlands Ranch, Colorado, where he served as the offensive coordinator for the state’s top football program. In his seven years at Valor, he helped lead the team to an 83-13 overall record and five state championships in six title game appearances.
At Valor, Kirk created, directed, and implemented all aspects of their offensive scheme, techniques, and practice planning for Valor teams that earned three Top 50 MaxPreps rankings and spent six of the seven years ranked in the Top 150 in the nation. He has directly coached players who continued their athletic careers at Stanford, Michigan, Nebraska, Kansas State, Virginia, Auburn, Colorado, Air Force, MIT, Wheaton, and more.
Kirk commented on his decision to join Valley Christian, “When we visited campus, my wife and I were immediately impressed to see Valley’s mission in action. We were drawn to the incredible kindness of the staff and faculty, the vibrant spiritual culture of the student body, and the genuine commitment to excellence in all things for God’s glory. Our excitement is palpable as we look forward to utilizing the platform of football to help young men grow their faith in Jesus, develop community with the families of Valley Christian, and join with the rest of the school in the work of advancing God’s kingdom in the minds and hearts of students. We consider it a true blessing to have our family join the Valley Christian community and now set out with high expectations and eager anticipation to see what the Lord does next.”
Kirk attended Wheaton College and was a member of the football team, starting for two years and earning All-Conference honors. He earned his Bachelor of Arts in Psychology from Wheaton in 2008. Following his playing career, he served as a graduate assistant on the Wheaton staff for two years before the move to Valor in 2011. Kirk is currently in the process of earning his Master of Arts in Coaching and Athletic Administration from Concordia University Irvine.
He is married to his wife, Caroline, and the couple have three young children.
Kirk will also join the Valley Christian staff as an Academic, College, and Career Advisor. In addition to his coaching experience, he has served as a counselor, dean, and teacher. He will begin meeting with players and coaches in preparation for spring practice and will begin working with athletic administration on his transition from Colorado to Valley Christian.
